Interaction of m-Dinitrobenzene (DNB) with Calcium and Potassium saturated reference smectites in aqueous suspensions

چکیده
Smectites are the most commonly found clay mineral in many temperate region soils. It exhibits variability in shrink – swell behavior and sorption of organic molecules. Previousresearch has established the relationship between extent of swelling and sorption of organiccompounds by smectites. The effect of the interlayer cation on sorption of organiccompounds and the inter-relationship between cation exchange selectivity and extent ofswelling has also been demonstrated. We investigated the effect of sorption of an organiccompound on cation exchange selectivity and the interaction between organic sorption, cation exchange, and clay swelling. Our hypothesis was that adsorption of organic moleculesin the interlayers of smectite influences the affinity of the clay for inorganic cations inaqueous systems. Caand Ksaturated SPV (bentonite) and SAz-1 were equilibrated withmixed salt solutions containing 0.01 M KCl and 0.005 M CaCl2 in the presence or absence of200 ppm m-dinitrobenzene (DNB). Concentrations of Ca and K in solution and on the clayand concentrations of m-DNB were measured. The clay suspensions, both with and withoutthe m-DNB, were also analyzed on the x-ray diffractometer to study the clay structure andthe d-spacing. In general, SPV that was initially saturated with Ca sorbed more m-DNB thanthe SPV that was initially saturated with K. In general, the SPV sorbed more m-DNB than theSAz-1. Sorption of m-DNB on SPV increased preference for K relative to Ca for samplesinitially saturated with Ca, but it had little effect on exchange selectivity for samples that

Thermodynamics of nitroaromatic compound adsorption from water by smectite clay.
Nitroaromatic compounds enter the environment through their use as explosives, pesticides, solvents, and synthetic intermediates in the manufacturing of dyes, perfumes, and drugs. Recent studies have found that many nitroaromatic compounds are strongly retained by smectites, especially K+-saturated smectites. Sorption occurs when nitroaromatic compounds replace water associated with the clay an...

Sorption of organic contaminants by soils is a determinant controlling their transport and fate in the environment. The influence of ionic strength on nitroaromatic compound sorption by K+- and Ca2+ -saturated smectite was examined. Sorption of 1,3-dinitrobenzene by K-smectite increased as KCl ionic strength increased from 0.01 to 0.30 M. In contrast, sorption by Ca-smectite at CaCl2 ionic stre...

An understanding of sorptive processes is key to describing the fate of chlorpyrifos [O,O-diethyl-O-(3, 5, 6-trichloro-2-pyridyl) phosphorothioate] in aquatic environments. The objectives of this study were to evaluate isotherms for adsorption and desorption of chlorpyrifos on colloidal materials and to advance understanding of interaction mechanisms between chlorpyrifos and colloidal materials...
متن کاملGeochemical modulation of bioavailability and toxicity of nitroaromatic compounds to aquatic plants.
Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) are prominent soil and sediment contaminants that are strongly adsorbed by smectites at extents that depend on hydration properties of the exchangeable cation. Potassium smectites adsorb nitroaromatics much more strongly than calcium smectites, so that adjustment of K+ versus Ca2+ occupation on cation exchange sites in smectites can be used to modulate the retenti...
